Schools of Excellence The Schools of Excellence (SOE) Committee has much planned for this school year. Yet, in order to understand what’s happening currently, we must back-up a bit. In September 2006, the committee submitted a Parent Involvement Plan to BCS administration, along with Recommendations for Action. This plan is based on the National Standards for Parent/Family Involvement set forth by the National PTA. These standards were written into the No Child Left Behind Act in 2002 and adopted as policy by the Bolton Board of Education in 2003. In December 2006, Dr. Lanfranchi responded to our recommendations, and in June 2007 the committee met with Dr. Lanfranchi, Mrs. Grande and Mr. Winzler, all of whom pledged their commitment to the ongoing work of this committee.
Mrs. Grande has been assigned the role of overseeing a staff committee to review the details of the parent involvement plan. Mrs. Accorsi, Mrs. Longo and Mrs. Rose will be working with her. This staff committee began reviewing the 35 page plan during the summer break and finished in early September. The staff committee and the SOE committee, which is comprised of parents, convened in mid-September to discuss our next steps. It was agreed that the two committees will meet on a monthly basis to jointly discuss the plan details and make mutual decisions as to what suggested items may be implemented. The plan is organized by the six national standards: Communication, Parenting, Student Learning, Volunteering, School Decision Making and Advocacy, and Collaborating with the Community. Upcoming meetings are scheduled for Monday, November 26th and Monday, December, 17th at 3:30 p.m. If you are interested in becoming involved with this process, please contact Christine Langton, at crlangton@comcast.net or Mary Grande at mary.grande@boltonct.org.
Schools of Excellence, Volunteering Sub-Committee
The Schools of Excellence Volunteering Sub-Committee held a kick-off meeting in October. This committee will focus specifically on the role of parent volunteers within the school. The purpose of the committee is to provide improved coordination, centralization and utilization of parent volunteers at BCS. The committee hopes that all parents who wish to volunteer in the school have that opportunity, and all staff members who wish to utilize parent volunteers can do so easily. The committee is currently drafting a survey that will be distributed to parents to identify talents that can be shared with the school community and a staff survey to better understand how staff would prefer to utilize parent volunteers. Additional upcoming activities may include establishing a volunteer coordinator role, preparing a volunteer handbook and coordinating a copying service for teachers. Participation on this committee is needed and welcomed. If interested, please contact Tracy Verrastro at tracejade@sbcglobal.net or 643-0904.
